Taiwanese chip maker, MediaTek, is doing quite a good job with its Dimensity 5G SoC series. The adoption rate of the Dimensity series is way higher than other MediaTek chips. It appears that 5G is the big break that the company has been waiting for. Yesterday, MediaTek officially announced a new chip in its Dimensity series – Dimensity 720 5G. Now, the Taiwan Economic Daily claims that a couple of Chinese manufacturers are set to use this chip. The report mentions Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo. However, these will not be the only manufacturers to use this chip.
The Dimensity 720 uses a 7nm process and integrates a low-power 5G modem. It comes with an eight-core CPU and contains two ARM Cortex-A76 cores with a clock speed of 2GHz. Ths chip also boasts of an ARM Mali-G57 GPU. In addition, the Dimensity 720 supports a 90Hz screen refresh rate, a maximum 64MP camera, and a 20MP + 16MP dual-camera combination.
Furthermore, this chip uses a DDR4x RAM up to 2133MHz, and a newer UFS 2.2 storage. This offers better performance. Apart from this, the SoC also supports HDR10+ content on displays with its in-house MiraVision technology. The company says with local mapping, the technology can retain details of darker areas, upscale HDR10 to HDR10+, and more. Supporting a maximum resolution of 2520×1080 pixels, it allows vendors to crank up the refresh rate up to 90Hz.
Dimensity 720 5G SoC offers a lot for mid-range performance
As for the cameras, the Dimensity 720 supports up to 64MP single camera or a combo of 20 + 16MP sensors. Its cameras can record 4K, HDR-ISP, Multi-Frame NR, 3D Noise Reduction, and more features supported by its own APU.
On the connectivity front, it has NSA/SA 5G which the company says supports global sub-6GHz standards which are optimal for Asia, NA, and Europe. It also has 4G Dual SIM, Dual standby (DSDS), two carrier Aggregation (2CC CA), Voice over New Radio (VoNR) support for better connectivity.
Other features include a Voice Wakeup (VoW) to minimize the power consumption of voice assistants like Google and have dual-mic noise suppression for a seamless experience. That said, the fabrication process and 5G gives it an edge over Qualcomm’s counterpart whose similarly named Snapdragon 720G is built on an older 8nm process and is restricted to 4G. Mediatek, on the other hand, says that the 5G modem on Dimensity 720 is power-efficient, has 5G UltraSave Technology to monitor the operation of modem and extend the battery life of the device. We don’t know which company will use this SoC but we expect it to be mainstream very soon.
